I didn't set out to write about return as redemption or repair. I was interested in return as a fact—the body arrives at a place it knows, and nothing happens to fix what broke. The river is still there. The house is still there. The people inside it have learned to love you in your absence, which is harder than they thought.

There's a specificity to the Pacific Northwest that demands precision. Not nostalgia, not the postcard version. The light through wet Douglas fir. The way damp never really leaves your joints. The economy of words people use when they mean everything.

My characters don't explain themselves. They make coffee. They walk to the store. They watch each other in the mirror and decide what to say or not say. Literary fiction lets me stay in that space—where the real conversation happens in the pause between sentences, in the choice to stay at the dinner table five minutes longer than comfort requires.

What the River Keeps is about a family that has learned to grieve in silence, and one person who comes back asking if the silence was ever about peace or just about endurance. It's about the conversations that should have happened. It's about what happens when they finally do.
